Michael still has his lease on the closet he used as the office space for the Michael Scott Paper Company. He has decided to convert it into a cafe disco for his employees to socialize, drink coffee, and dance as a way to re-energize the office after VP Charles Miner seemingly took it away. None of the employees care to join him, which makes Michael upset as no one wants to socialize with him. Michael starts playing music through the vent to tempt them to come.

Phyllis ultimately gives in and joins Michael, but when she starts dancing too hard, she throws out her back. Dwight brings her into the conference room and starts giving her a kind of massage he usually gives horses. Phyllis tells him she believes her husband Bob Vance is going to have an affair with his secretary, a suspicion brought on by the secretary not allowing Phyllis to go in and ask Bob to join her in the cafe disco, but she laughs off the thought as saying it sounds silly.

Michael decides to close up the cafe disco after what happened. When Erin starts cleaning up the cafe disco, Kelly comes in and Erin turns on the stereo and the two start dancing, catching the eye of two male employees from Vance Refrigeration. Soon enough, the rest of the employees start joining them, much to Michael’s delight.

Meanwhile, Jim and Pam have decided to obtain a marriage license as planning their expensive wedding has become too stressful. They find that the only place they can do it immediately is a city hall in Youngstown, Ohio and they opt not to tell the employees. Pam comes to work with a wedding dress and Jim picks up flowers in the office parking lot. They decide to spend some time in the cafe disco before heading out. They end up having a lot of fun, which makes them decide to have an actual wedding ceremony instead of going to Ohio.

Michael tries to convince Angela to loosen up, but she continuously refuses, though she eventually does so a little. Phyllis eventually recovers and reunites with Bob in the cafe disco. Oscar is mildly baffled that Erin actually invited one of her friends to come. Kevin is seen passionately making out with Lynn, the woman he met at the Valentine’s Day singles mixer. Andy and Kelly engage in a competitive dance contest. At the end of the episode, Kelly is shown attempting to pierce Andy’s ear in the women’s bathroom, where Andy keeps squirming even when Kelly only puts ice on his ear.

“Cafe Disco” is the twenty-fifth episode of the fifth season television series The Office and the show’s ninety-ninth overall. The episode aired in the United States on May 7, 2009, on NBC at 9 PM EDT.
