One month after the shooting, the doctors are still trying to cope with the loss of their co-workers, as well as trying to process what happened to each other. After recovering from his gunshot wound, Derek thinks he’s become invincible and starts racing with his car, which often leads to Derek being arrested, although no one actually presses charges against him because he’s saved so many police officers. When he returns to work, he resigns as Chief, and re-instates Dr. Webber as the Chief of Seattle Grace. Meredith is frustrated that she and Cristina still haven’t been cleared for surgery by their counselor, while all the other doctors have been. Cristina thinks it’s because Meredith refuses to tell Derek about the miscarriage, but Meredith rejects that idea. Cristina, meanwhile, prepares for her wedding with Owen, who proposed to her days after the shooting.
Mark is outraged when he learns that Lexie has been cleared for surgery. A week prior to the current events, she had a nervous breakdown in front of all the doctors and patients, and Mark was forced to admit her to Psych, when she was heavily drugged to keep her calm. Lexie tells him she’s okay now, and that he shouldn’t worry about her. She does, however, still have a lot of problems when it comes to trying to process what happened to her during the shooting, as a result of her photographic memory that forces her to remember every little detail of that specific day. It’s also revealed that Alex did not support her at all during the weeks after the shooting.
A teenage boy is brought in with a massive tumor, and Derek needs all surgeons on board to get the tumor out and keep the boy alive. The residents are shocked when they learn the boy’s face will be completely cut in half in order to remove the tumor, and it frustrates Meredith even more because she’s not allowed to scrub in. The surgeons start on the difficult surgery, while others watch from the observation room. Eventually, Meredith and Cristina confess to each other that they’re not okay yet, and Cristina talks to their counselor and tells him she wishes she was just a normal girl, because normal girls don’t get guns pointed at them during surgeries. The surgery goes well and the tumor is removed. When the boy wakes up, he is in excruciating pain, much like Derek had predicted to him and his mother before the surgery. Derek is able to calm the boy down and tells him and his mother that the pain is no longer caused by the tumor, but by the surgery, meaning it’s healing pain, and that it will get better over the course of the next few months.
On Owen and Cristina’s wedding day, Derek is once again arrested for speeding, and having grown tired of bailing him out, Meredith leaves him in jail after picking up the rings. Mark steps in as best man, while Meredith is Cristina’s Maid of Honor. Callie asks Arizona to move in with her, who happily agrees. Alex makes a comment to Lexie about how she looks, she finally reveals to him what he said while almost dying, and Alex is confronted with his lingering feelings for Izzie. A little while later, Cristina and Owen are wed at Meredith’s place.
