Lightning strikes a football team during a game bringing in multiple patients to the hospital. Mark is worried about Lexie, whose patient is suffering from temporary paralysis due to the lightning, so spends the whole day trying to protect her from being exposed to surgery or any pressure. Lexie however saves her patients life when she sees a video of the lightning hitting the football team and realizes her patient did not get hit by lightning, therefore her temporary paralysis may be due to bleeding in the spinal column. She convinces Derek in front of Mark that she is not crazy and that he has to come and help her patient who survives after surgery.

Meredith has still not been cleared for surgery so attempts to trick the counselor by crying and saying how much she was affected by Derek being shot. She then spends most of the day avoiding Derek as she left him in prison the night before. He turns up to the hospital late in the morning and tries to talk to Meredith who refuses. Eventually Meredith talks to Derek and tells him that she was pregnant and had a miscarriage and she demands him to stop speeding because it makes her think he might go out one day and never come back. This leads to them reconciling and Meredith then tells this to the trauma counselor who clears her for surgery.

Alex refuses to get the bullet removed from his chest therefore Bailey refuses to let him in on any surgeries. Bailey calls him to surgery at the end of the day and tells him that she needs him to have it removed because she does not want a constant reminder of that day to be following her around. He agrees and lets her operate to remove it.

Christina is not cleared for surgery at the start of the day but Teddy and Hunt plead with the chief to go over the counselors head and clear her so she can be part of a high risk ex-vivo heart surgery which they believe will help kickstart her old self. The chief grants this and she operates on a patient whom she had operated on previously with Doctor Burke.

During the operation, Avery knocks over a tray of surgical equipment which causes Christina to break down and collapse onto the ground while holding some of the tissue needed to repair the heart. Meredith comes into the operating room and lies on the ground with Christina, talking to her until she is ready to get up. Hunt comes and finds Christina after the surgery, which was successful, and she says she can’t be there anymore and gives him back the wedding ring. She is at Meredith and Derek’s house when they get home and Meredith tells her that Christina took and oath for better and for worse, and that this is the worst, it will get better. Hunt turns up at the house and refuses to let her go, saying she stuck by him when he was in a bad place and now he will do the same for her, no matter what.

“Shock to the System” is the second episode of the seventh season of the ABC series Grey’s Anatomy. It aired on September 30, 2010.
