Stefan and Damon plot to get the moonstone from Katherine, who has grown bored and hungry tomb and refuses to give it to them unless they have Bonnie lift the spell to free her. They want to use the moonstone to lift the curse so that Klaus will stop pursuing Elena. Elena asks Rose to take her to Slater so that they can learn more about Klaus and where to find him.

They find Slater’s staked corpse in his house; Elena uses information from his computer to get Klaus’s attention, saying that she, the doppleganger, is willing to surrender. Rose protests, but Elena insists that surrendering is the only way to protect the people she loves from Klaus. Meanwhile, Caroline and Tyler discuss the approaching full moon and go into the underground tomb on the old Lockwood family property; they find chains and other objects that they realize had been used by other Lockwood werewolves during the full moon.

They also discover Mason’s journal and the video diary that he used to document his transformation, and Tyler breaks down in fear of transformation after seeing how badly Mason had suffered. Bonnie comes up with a plan to lift the spell from the tomb and temporarily incapacitate Katherine so that Stefan can quickly grab the moonstone, but Jeremy goes ahead with the plan before Bonnie and Stefan arrive and ends up captured in the tomb by Katherine, who feeds on him.

He manages to throw the moonstone outside the tomb, and when Stefan and Bonnie arrive, Stefan pushes Jeremy safely out of the tomb but is trapped in it himself. Rose calls Damon and notifies him of Elena’s plan; he arrives at Slater’s house and tells Elena that he will not let her surrender to Klaus. Luca’s father uses magic to help Elijah locate Elena. Elijah and two other vampires come to Slater’s house and confront Damon, Rose, and Elena; the two unnamed vampires tell Elijah that they are there to take Elena to Klaus, but Elijah kills them and leaves Damon, Rose, and Elena unharmed. Damon and Elena return to Mystic Falls to find Stefan trapped in the tomb with Katherine; Elena panics and tries to run to him, but Damon restrains her.

Stefan makes Damon promise to protect Elena, and he agrees. Katherine smirkingly tells Stefan that he has just made a big mistake. Elijah informs Luca’s father of what happened at Slater’s house, saying that he had not killed Damon and Rose because he could see that they would protect Elena, which is what Elijah has been trying to do all along.

“The Sacrifice” is the tenth episode of season 2 of The Vampire Diaries and the 32nd episode overall. It first broadcast December 2, 2010 on The CW Network.
