The Vampire Diaries 12/9/10 “By the Light of the Moon” Episode Recap

December 11th, 2010 · No Comments

As the full moon approaches Caroline does her best to help Tyler prepare. He chains himself to the walls and floor of the underground tomb on the old Lockwood property, screaming in pain and terror as he suffers the severity of transformation. Caroline, who stays with him until forced to leave when he tries to attack her, cries helplessly out of sympathy for Tyler, wanting to help him but not knowing how.

Meanwhile, Katherine taunts Stefan about Damon’s feelings for Elena, saying that Damon will not hurry to free Stefan from the tomb, since he now has Elena to himself. She implants a dream in his head of the two of them kissing, much to his anger. In response to Katherine’s insistence of her love for him, Stefan asks her to prove that there is some good in her, and she grudgingly advises him to recruit Isobel, Elena’s mother, to help him, Damon, and the others find Klaus.

Meanwhile, Bonnie and Jeremy decide that Elena can’t be trusted after she tries to leave the house with the moonstone; Bonnie places a spell on the house that prevents Elena from leaving it. Bonnie later seeks Luca’s help to destroy the moonstone; they cast a spell that appears to work, but it is revealed that Luca tricked Bonnie when he hands the moonstone, still intact over to his father, on Elijah’s orders. Damon and Alaric are suspicious of a woman named Jules, who arrives in Mystic Falls looking for Mason.

Jules, a friend of Mason’s who appears to be staying at his house, had realized that Tyler is a werewolf after Tyler left a voicemail for Mason, asking for his help. She reveals herself to be a werewolf after Damon and Alaric try to trick her into having a drink mixed with wolfsbane; she warns Damon not to cross her on a full moon, and threateningly tells him he has been marked. Elijah, on the pretense of seeking Jenna’s help with a project, arrives at Elena’s house to speak with her; he reveals that Klaus’ increasing paranoia over the years has lead to his efforts to try and break the curse.

Elijah, who is no longer among Klaus’ inner circle, is trying to protect Elena because he doesn’t want the curse broken. He offers Elena a deal: if she stays out of the business with Klaus and keeps herself safe, Elijah will make sure that her friends are not harmed. She agrees, on the condition that Elijah free Stefan from the tomb, which he does.

As Stefan leaves the tomb with Elijah, Katherine begs him not to leave her there, but he walks away. As Damon and Rose talk at the Salvatore mansion, Jules, now transformed into a wolf, arrives and tries to attack Damon; she bites Rose’s shoulder before disappearing. Though the wounds appears to heal at first, at the end of the episode Rose’s shoulder appears to be infected, meaning that a werewolf bite is fatal to a vampire.

“By the Light of the Moon” is the eleventh episode of season 2 of The Vampire Diaries and the 33rd episode overall. It first broadcast December 9, 2010 on The CW Network.
