Elena waits in the cellar where Elijah is held. Elijah wakes up unexpectedly and the scene changes to England in 1492, where he met Katherine for the first time. He then introduces Katherine to Klaus. Back in the present, Elijah cannot breathe because he was not invited in the the Salvatore’s Boarding House. While outside, Elena persuades Elijah to trust her, by giving him the silver dagger that kills Originals.

Meanwhile, Stefan and Damon discover that Elijah is not in the basement and Elena is gone. They search frantically for her, only to be told that she is with Elijah. Elena specifically tells them to not worry, and demands that Damon “doesn’t do anything stupid”. Stefan and Damon have a stand-off, due to their disagreement on how Elena should do things.

Meanwhile, Elena tells Elijah everything that has happened since his death. In return, Elijah tells Elena about Klaus. It is revealed that Elijah and Klaus are brothers. Their parents bore seven children, however, Klaus’ father was not of the same family. Elijah’s father had hunted down the man and killed his family, which caused the hatred between vampires and werewolves. Klaus is a vampire/werewolf hybrid, meaning he cannot be killed by the dagger because werewolves will heal if attacked with silver.

It is also revealed that the ‘sun and the moon curse’ is fake; the real curse is upon Klaus. Witches came together and put his werewolf half dormant. Elijah fell in love with Katherine, and is determined for that to not happen again with Elena. Jenna is still in the shadows with Alaric and the vampire business. Klaus (Alaric) pays her a visit, accompanied with Stefan, and Klaus reveals the secret of vampires and Stefan is froced to reveal that he is a vampire. Afterwards, Jenna gets upset with Elena and Jeremy, stating that she is supposed to be the one protecting them, not the other way around. Elena comforts her.

Elsewhere, Katherine is held captive by Klaus (in Alaric’s body). Maddox leaves to retrieve Klaus’ true body. Klaus informs Katherine that he is ready to break the curse, and compels her to stay in the apartment. Damon pays a visit to Katherine and gives her a vial of vervain, preventing her from being compelled by Klaus. In the Salvatore’s house, Damon appears to be in torment, between his cold vampire self and his love for Elena.

At the end of the episode, Maddox and Greta (Luka’s sister) perform a ritual: releasing Klaus’ spirit from Alaric’s body, and putting it back into his own.

“Klaus” is the nineteenth episode of season 2 of The Vampire Diaries and the 41st episode overall. It first broadcast April 21, 2011 on The CW Network.
