Elena and Jeremy deal with losing yet another family member, Jenna, by attending Mystic Falls’ production of “Gone with the Wind” in an effort to create normalcy. Meanwhile Stefan seeks the help of Bonnie to find a cure for Damon’s wolf bite which is slowly killing him. They visit the spirits of the dead witches who tell Bonnie that the cure lies with Klaus. Klaus meanwhile, must keep his word to reunite Elijah with his family and kills him, proving that his family has been dead all this time.

Sheriff Forbes finally takes action upon the Salvatores and intrudes into the Salvatore home, ignorant to Damon’s current situation. Damon escapes, but Elena, who came to visit Damon in an effort to reconcile with after hearing of his wolf bite from Stefan, is locked up by the Sheriff. She manages to escape however. As for Stefan and Klaus, Klaus reveals that his blood is the cure for a werewolf bite; however in order to obtain the cure for Damon, Stefan must return to his old self and join Klaus who will be leaving Mystic Falls.

Stefan is forced to drink several bags of blood in order to get the cure for Damon. Damon meanwhile is brought to The Grill by Jeremy who is shot and killed by the Sheriff by a bullet meant for Damon. Bonnie takes Jeremy’s body to the witches to seek their help. They become agitated with her demands and warn her of consequences, but bring Jeremy back to life. The news of Jeremy’s revival reaches Caroline and her mother who make amends. Elena finds a wandering Damon and brings him back home where they exchange intimate feelings and Damon confesses his love for her.

Elena kisses Damon, an act which is witnessed by Katherine who brings Damon’s cure from Klaus, as he was satisfied with Stefan’s cooperation. Katherine administers the cure and tells Elena of Stefan’s situation; how he is now under Klaus’ order in order to save Damon. As she leaves she remarks to Elena, “It’s okay to love both of them…I did.”

Klaus and Stefan prepare to leave Mystic Falls but as one last test, Klaus tells Stefan to drink from and kill an innocent. Stefan obediently complies. During the night, Jeremy hears noises and awakes from bed. He rouses and follows the noise downstairs, where he sees Anna and Vicky, both his past girlfriends and both who are supposedly dead.

“As I Lay Dying” is the 22nd episode of season 2 of The Vampire Diaries and the 44th episode overall. It first broadcast May 12, 2011 on The CW Network.
