Claire Bennet and her father Noah realize that their attempts to dig out of the trailer Samuel Sullivan has trapped them in will only use up their limited air supply quicker. Noah accepts his death as inevitable, telling Claire that Samuel has trapped them there so she can watch him die (Claire cannot suffocate as her lungs will continue to regenerate). Claire, however, is unable to accept her father’s death, even as he tells her his dying wish is for her to hide herself as a normal human after Samuel exposes his powers to the world.

As Noah begins to run out of breath, Tracy Strauss arrives through a water channel in the dirt surrounding the trailer and is able to bring both Claire and Noah back to the surface alive, where they meet up with Lauren Gilmore. Lauren has called a copter to take the three of them to Central Park, where Samuel and his carnival are setting up for “the greatest show on earth”, while Tracy has disappeared for unknown reasons.

Meanwhile, at Matt Parkman’s house, Sylar and Peter, now freed from the nightmare in Sylar’s mind, stop Eli from killing Matt by knocking the original Eli out. Matt refuses to let Sylar go with Peter, even after Sylar asks him to look inside his mind and decide for himself whether or not Sylar’s intentions are noble. Although Matt still does not fully trust Sylar’s mind, he grudgingly gives him a chance to prove himself on Peter’s plea to trust them. As the two leave, Matt approaches the unconscious Eli and instructs him to return to the carnival.

In Central Park, as the carnival sets up, Emma Coolidge confronts Samuel, who confirms Peter’s dream is true. As Emma refuses to comply, Doyle emerges from Samuel’s trailer and puppets her into playing, which quickly attracts a large crowd as well as media attention. Peter and Sylar arrive and split up; Peter looks for Samuel as Sylar goes to save Emma. Upon finding her, he too is controlled by Doyle until Emma, noticing a momentary gap in attention, blasts Doyle with her synesthetic sound manipulation ability. Sylar telepathically pins Doyle to the ground as he begs for mercy, telling Sylar that he is not a good guy. Sylar responds defiantly that “I’m a hero.” He is later shown to have tied up Doyle with a string of lights rather than simply kill him, another sign to prove his change into a new person.

At the hospital, Hiro Nakamura awakens from his hallucination and tells Ando that he is fully healed. As they prepare to leave, a nurse gives Hiro a note from a woman in another hospital room. The note reads “Is it really you?” and is accompanied by a small origami swan. Hiro rushes to the room to find Charlie Andrews on the bed, now a 85-year-old woman. Hiro is shocked as she explains that at the Burnt toast Diner, Arnold took her back to Milwaukee on January 26, 1944, where she lived her life, getting a job in a war factory. Hiro, after talking with Ando, explains that he can “fix this” by time-traveling to 1944 and bringing her back so they can live a life together. Charlie admits the idea is tempting, but explains that she has lived a life, marrying and having four kids and seven grandchildren, of whom Hiro meets one, named Sally. Hiro realizes he cannot take this life away from Charlie for his own personal happiness just as Ando receives an urgent call for help from Noah. Hiro transports himself and Ando to the carnival.

Meanwhile, Noah and Claire have also shown up and split ways; Claire to convince the carnival specials to leave, and Noah to find Samuel. However, Noah is quickly captured at knifepoint by Edgar, who pulls him aside and reveals that he also wants to stop Samuel. Claire finds Samuel’s people and attempts to convince them of Samuel’s evil intentions, telling them of Samuel’s ability to grow stronger with more superhumans around him. No one listens to her until she reveals that Samuel killed his brother Joseph. The crowd finally believes her when Noah arrives with Edgar, who backs up Claire’s claim, explaining that Lydia told him everything before she was killed. Eli also arrives, having been brainwashed by Matt Parkman, and tells everyone how Samuel had him kill Lydia.

As everyone leaves Samuel, he attempts to get them back, but eventually screams “Run as fast as you can! You’ll never get far enough!” Afterward, he goes out to address the large crowd, and begins to use his powers to shake the earth. However, Peter slams into him, taking his ability, and they enter into a standoff in Samuel’s tent. Hiro and Ando arrive and transport all the carnival superhumans away from Central Park, rendering Samuel powerless. Samuel exits and collapses on the ground until police arrive. Noah remarks that “I gotta say. I never liked carnivals.”

Lauren enters the carnival in order to find some medical supplies to clean her bullet wound when she is confronted by Emma who begins to tend to her wound. She reveals that she came with the intent to stop Samuel whom she tells Emma has done very bad things and has manipulated the people of the carnival like the guru of a cult. When Samuel approaches to visit Emma, Lauren hides, only to have Emma tell Samuel she is there. When Samuel confronts her, he gets Eli to deal with her, but she escapes.

Samuel still wishes for Claire to join his carnival family, so in one final move, he bring Claire to her father who is being held in the House of Mirrors. He then ask Damien to reveal to Claire Noah’s past memories in hopes that by seeing these particular memories, she will loss all respect for her father and join him. As is revealed to her, back in 1985, Noah Bennet had another wife before Sandra named Kate. She was killed by a special with telekinesis and was drive into a spiral of rage and fear which lead him to killing another special. This caught the attention of The Company and lead him to join.

After a time with them, he develop some overly aggressive habits and paranoia of his partner Claude, thus he was ordered to find a new relationship and start a new family. In spite of all these things, Claire seemed willing to forgive him until she was shown a recent memory of Noah confronting Gretchen to persuade her under threat of memory erasure that she help push Claire into staying away from Samuel and in school to have a normal life. This prompt Claire to storm out of the House of Mirrors and confront Samuel. He is highly disappointed when in spite of all that she saw, she is still loyal to her father and decisively refuses to ever join the carnival family so long as he is in charge. As Samuel finally reunites her with her father again in the souvenir trailer, he uses his ability to trap them several feet underground as the carnival packs up to head to Central Park where he plans to reveal their abilities to the world and make them tremble in fear as they kill thousands of innocent people. As they are preparing to leave, Samuel sends Eli on a mission as he tells him that before she died, Lydia revealed to him the identity of two people who intend to interfere and thus must be stopped.

Upon entering the mental prison Matt trapped Sylar in, Peter yells out in hopes that Sylar will answer and he will be able to find him. Sylar meanwhile is toiling over some old broken watches just as he use to do before he became a killer. He then hears a noise from somewhere, so he shifts himself to street level where he finally confronts Peter who found a metal post to bang against the pavement in order to get his attention. Peter reveals to Sylar that he intends to free him from this nightmare of his which Sylar believes he has been trapped in for three years when in actuality it has only been about three hours. At first, Sylar thinks this is only his mind playing tricks on him until Peter reveals what he say in his precognitive dream about Sylar saving Emma from killing thousands of innocent people (Close to You).

While reluctantly accepting what Peter tells him, Sylar dares him to free them, only to have Peter fail in his attempt. Peter then proceeds to simply avoid Sylar for three months in dream world time (DWT). When they finally start talking again, Sylar reveals he does not really want to escape for he feels he deserves this punishment, but Peter know if both of them are to escape, he needs to get Sylar on the same page as him. Just then, a brick wall manifest in front of them which they realize they must break through in order to escape. Peter sledges away at it for several years (DWT), all the while Sylar apologizes for killing his brother Nathan.

Eventually, Peter learns to let go of his anger, forgive Sylar and accept that he is truly a changed man, thus allowing them to be able to break through the wall and escape the mental prison. As they both wake up, and Sylar telekinetically breaks through the wall Matt sealed him behind, they look at Peter’s Watch to discover that only about half a day has gone by. As they prepare to leave they are stopped by Eli.

“The Wall” is the seventeenth episode of the fourth season of the NBC science fiction drama series Heroes, and the seventy-sixth episode overall. The episode aired on February 1, 2010.

Peter Petrelli continues having dreams of Emma Coolidge at the carnival, and subsequently being saved by Sylar. Peter meets with Angela Petrelli to help her come to terms with Nathan Petrelli’s passing, then asks Angela where Sylar is. Although Angela doesn’t want Peter to go anywhere near Sylar, Peter manages to to acquire his location. Meanwhile, Matt Parkman is stunned to see Sylar at his home, who has created the ruse that he and Matt used to work together as cops to fool Janice. Matt is able to privately talk with Sylar in the basement, who reveals he wants Matt to use his ability to mentally suppress his powers and be normal again.

Matt is unsure he can do it, but Sylar threatens Janice and Matt’s son. Matt’s initial attempt fails, causing Sylar to lash out and hold Janice with his telekinesis. Sylar explains these powers are what are making him insane, and Matt must get rid of his powers. Sylar lets Janice go, and Matt talks with her to make sure she’s alright. Janice realizes the man is Sylar and tells Matt he must bury him for good so that he can’t hurt anyone. Matt agrees, and then tricks Sylar into thinking he is ridding him of his powers. However, Matt explains he has trapped Sylar in his own nightmare: a world where no one exists but himself so that he will be alone forever. Matt takes the knocked out Sylar and begins building a brick wall around him in the basement to trap him for good, but he is then interrupted by the arrival of Peter. Borrowing Matt’s ability, Peter learns where Sylar is and explains he needs Sylar so he can save everyone. Matt warns Peter of Sylar’s state and that if Peter tries waking him, he may become trapped too. Peter touches Sylar’s head, and finds himself in a world devoid of anybody. Peter is shown wandering a desolate city, calling out for anyone.

After her encounter with Sylar, Claire Bennet visits Noah Bennet’s apartment to speak to him about it, but instead finds Lauren. After entering, Claire notices the maps and realizes that Noah is planning to attack the carnival. Lauren tries to convince Claire to wait for Noah, but Claire decides to leave for the carnival. Meanwhile, Samuel Sullivan discovers his family’s trust in him has shaken due to his demolishing of the town. Claire visits Lydia, revealing Noah’s plan to take out Samuel, and that Samuel must turn himself in. They explain the situation to Samuel, who finally agrees after Claire urges him to take responsibility and protect his family.

Claire calls Noah, who is watching Samuel through a sniper scope, and explains that Samuel will go with him peacefully. Noah agrees, and has Lauren head down to take Samuel in while he provides cover. Samuel addresses the carnival, telling them his decision to leave with Claire, but is interrupted by sniper fire to his shoulder. Shots continue to be fired, with many people injured, including Lydia, Claire, although she quickly heals, and even Lauren on her way down the surrounding hillside. It is then shown it isn’t Noah who is firing, who looks around and spots Eli firing with his own sniper rifle. Noah takes him out with his sniper, but realizes it was just a copy as the real Eli appears behind him and knocks him out.

Samuel finds Lydia, who is mortally wounded, and kisses her. In her dying breaths, Lydia uses her powers on Samuel, and is horrified to see Samuel had planned this, who explains he needed to create a villain in the form of Noah and have Lydia sacrificed. Eli brings Noah down for everyone to see, and the carnival quickly puts the blame on him and Claire. In his half-conscious state, Noah manages to tell Claire it wasn’t him who had fired, but Samuel has Noah locked up in the house of mirrors and Claire in his trailer. Emma Coolidge later arrives, who Samuel is pleased to see, telling her she can help them make a new world and show everyone how great they can be. Lauren, having managed to spot Eli carrying Noah down to the carnival, places a call to Tracy Strauss, telling her she was told to call if Noah was in trouble. Edgar arrives to see Lydia’s body, shocked to see her dead. Samuel then addresses the whole carnival, telling them it’s time to show the world who they really are.

“The Art of Deception” is the sixteenth episode of the fourth season of the NBC science fiction drama series Heroes, and the seventy-fifth episode overall. The episode aired on January 25, 2010.

Soon after he has left, Hiro Nakamura passes out from his brain tumor, and begins having an hallucination: Hiro is on trial for breaking the Hero’s code, punishable by death, having altered the timeline for personal gain.

His father Kaito Nakamura appears as the judge, along with Adam Monroe representing the prosecution; Ando Masahashi appears as Hiro’s attorney, while the entire courtroom appears to be inside the Burnt Toast Diner. Adam first calls the younger Ando and Kimiko to the stand, saying Hiro had gone back in time to make them fall in love, while the present Ando argues that Hiro had not done it for selfish reasons. Hiro further adds that no one was hurt by his actions, to which Adam then calls up his next witness, Sylar. Sylar explains that by having Charlie Andrews live, Hiro effectively allowed Sylar to kill all the people he has. Hiro argues that the world would be a better place with Charlie, but Adam points out that she is still lost in time because of Hiro. For the defense, Hiro has himself called to the stand, where Hiro argues that everything he has done was for the good of the world, and if his actions would cause him to be guilty, then he’s fine with it. Kaito gives the guilty verdict, causing Hiro in the real world to flatline in a hospital. In his hallucination, Hiro is lead towards the light, where Hiro asks for a chance to redeem himself and given it. However, he must fight for his honor, as he is forced into a swordfight with Adam. With the real Ando encouraging him, Hiro manages to defeat Adam, and steps towards the light. His mother, Ishi, then appears, who tells Hiro she will heal him. In the real world, Ando is relieved to see Hiro revived.

Samuel attempts to woo the love of his life, Vanessa. Although she rebuffs his advances initially, she eventually warms to his romantic nature, and the two begin to hit it off. The two talk about a dream of Vanessa’s to one day live in a cabin in a gorgeous countryside; Samuel reveals he’s brought her dream to life, showing her the cabin in the lush environment. Vanessa is amazed, but admits she can’t just live out here with him. Vanessa urges they live among the city, though Samuel is visibly hurt and the two depart. Later, a furious Samuel uses his powers to demolish the entire nearby city, while Vanessa leaves for her home, although she contemplates whether to stay with him or not.

Claire Bennet continues to reject being close with Gretchen, who offers her support, though Claire still feels uncomfortable. Claire later runs into Sylar, who shows her his tattoo and that she must help him. Sylar is afraid of being alone, of not being able to connect with anyone. Claire is furious and doesn’t wish to help, but Sylar implies that he is holding Gretchen hostage back in their dorm room. Sylar begins by pointing out that he and Claire are similar, such as both being abandoned and then adopted. Claire tries to flee, but Sylar pins her down; Sylar then kisses Claire and uses Lydia’s ability to on her. Sylar explains to Claire that by not getting close to anyone, such as Gretchen, she too, like him, may be alone forever. Claire then uses a pencil to stab Sylar in the eye, and flees to her dorm.

She finds Gretchen unharmed, but the two are forced to flee when the windows shatter. Fearing Sylar, the two hide in a closet outside. Claire reveals to Gretchen she really does want to be with her, but is afraid. She also admits that Sylar and herself are more alike then she knew, as Claire is also afraid she will end up alone for the rest of her life. Claire and Gretchen then deduce it is their powers that are messing up their lives, and by ridding themselves of it, they can be human again. Gretchen then reveals herself to actually be Sylar, who thanks Claire for the talk and tells her he never kidnapped Gretchen in the first place. After he’s left, Claire meets with Gretchen, who admits she’s thankful she has her and is ready to be with her; the two walk back to their dorm holding hands, while a lonesome Sylar watches. Later, Sylar visits the home of Matt Parkman, whose unassuming wife lets him in.

Samuel Sullivan assures Lydia that despite all that’s happened lately, she should still believe in him and hold out for his plans to unfold. Despite this, Lydia still secretly remains unconvinced. After a suggestion from her daughter, Lydia decides to call out to someone, one who Joseph Sullivan himself had deemed worthy to replace him. The person in question is revealed to Peter Petrelli, who awakens from sleep to see the compass tattoo reappear on his arm. Later, Emma Coolidge tests her siren song ability by drawing Peter to her apartment.

Peter notices the compass marking on the cello, and learns Samuel had given it to her. Peter takes her to his apartment, and reveals he had met with him, and that he shouldn’t be trusted. Angela Petrelli arrives unexpectedly, who seems to ominously recognize Emma. After Emma leaves, Angela reveals she had a dream about her, saying Emma would be responsible for the deaths of hundreds of people. Peter can hardly believe it and demands to know more, though she refuses. Peter lets his mother leave but not before copying her ability. That night, Peter dreams of Emma at the carnival, sitting in its house of mirrors, where she plays the cello fiercely with a look of anguish. Screams, presumably of people dying, are heard in the background. At this point, Sylar steps in and offering his hand, tells her he can save her. Peter awakens from his dream and visits Emma, where he destroys the cello to stop the dream from coming true. Peter tries to explain, but Emma, shocked by what he did, asks him to leave.

Hiro Nakamura and Ando Masahashi arrive at the psychiatric hospital where Mohinder Suresh has been held since Hiro had put him there. Although Hiro has difficulty explaining, Ando manages to understand why they had come here. Hiro purposefully has himself incarcerated there to locate Mohinder. Ando manages to switch out the medications given to Mohinder that had been keeping him sedated, and the three manage to escape the facility thanks to Ando’s and Mohinder’s abilities. Realizing they won’t be able to outrun the guards, Mohinder suggests Ando use his powers on Hiro as a form of electroshock therapy. The shock restores Hiro’s mind, and the three of them quickly teleport away.

Noah Bennet, refusing to ask his daughter for her compass, grows increasingly frustrated with finding a lead on Samuel, straining his relationship with Lauren. Lauren finally does find a lead in the form of Vanessa Wheeler, Samuel’s former love, and locates her in California. Annoyed at Noah’s obsession to find Samuel, she leaves to have Noah track down Vanessa himself. Noah visits Matt Parkman, who has since been happily living with his family despite being jobless. Despite Noah’s earlier request for help had resulted in Sylar’s mind being trapped in Matt’s, Noah manages to convince him to come with him and talk with Vanessa. Matt uses his ability to make her trust them, allowing Vanessa to reveal that she still occasionally meets with Samuel. Noah has Vanessa arrange to meet with Samuel, and plans to catch Samuel when he does. However, the plan goes awry when Eli also shows up with his decoys, allowing Samuel and Vanessa to escape. Despite tracking Vanessa’s cell, they find that Samuel has managed to move the entire carnival.

Matt urges Noah to worry about the problems he can fix, such as his situation with his daughter Claire Bennet, and with that he could then simply ask to borrow her compass to lead them straight to Samuel. Matt returns to his home, deciding that this is simply to big for them, but he is shown that Noah may have convinced him to not be a coward and do what is right. Noah visits Claire briefly to apologize, though she doesn’t appear ready yet as she politely tells him she has to leave, but seems willing to in the future as she offers to call him and talk again about everything. Meanwhile, Vanessa is upset that Samuel is holding her at the carnival against her will, though Samuel promises to let her go once he shows her something that he is sure to astound her. Later, Noah returns to his apartment, where he and Lauren make up with a kiss. However, they are soon interrupted by Hiro, Ando, and Mohinder who teleport into the room.

“Close to You” is the fourteenth episode of the fourth season of the NBC science fiction drama series Heroes, and the seventy-third episode overall. The episode aired on January 11, 2010.
