In the next sneak peek clip of the next all-new episode of Merlin, Arthur looks to use Merlin for his own target practice. Merlin clearly doesn’t have his head on straight, but then again, he’s probably much better suited for another activity. When Merlin seems to be holding something back, Arthur tries to drag out more information from him to then hear the Merlin and Gaius have had a falling out. Arthur tries to tell him to let it simply blow over and encourages him with a brotherly blow to the arm. Merlin doesn’t exactly understand the meaning since he claims the knights might be a little thick in receiving the same encouragement. This response only deserves another blow from Arthur. Watch the clip and tune in on Friday at 10/9c on Syfy to see if Merlin can settle the falling out, and if Arthur can give him some real advice.

Inside the ruined castle of Idirsholas, Morgause performs a magical ritual in the presence of seven motionless figures clad in black. Upon the completion of the ritual, a fire erupts in the center of the room, animating the figures.

In Camelot, Uther is brought word by a farmer that smoke was seen to be rising from the citadel of Idirsholas. Worried, Gaius warns Uther that the old legend says that the Knights of Medhir would ride again if the fires of Idirsholas burn. Arthur is ordered to take men out to the site to investigate, despite the prince’s skeptical nature.

Gaius reveals to Merlin that 300 years ago, seven of Camelot’s finest knights were seduced by the sorceress Medhir and swore themselves to her service. The knights became a force to be reckoned with as they rampaged through the kingdom, destroying everything and killing everyone in their path. The knights were finally stopped only when Medhir herself was killed, as without her magic, they became lifeless and still.

When Arthur, Merlin and a group of soldiers arrive at Idirsholas, they are ambushed by the knights: the soldiers are massacred and it is only with the secret use of Merlin’s magic that he and Arthur survive. They decide to return to Camelot to regroup and devise another attack.

Meanwhile, Morgause contacts her half-sister Morgana and they meet in secret. Their common hate for Uther strengthens Morgana’s conviction that he must be defeated; and she agrees to help Morgause. When Morgana awakes, she finds that the people around her are coming down with a strange sickness which renders them weak and tired. When Arthur and Merlin return, they are horrified to find everybody in a state of unbreakable slumber. Working their way through the castle, Arthur and Merlin struggle to understand the enchantment cast over Camelot. After placing a sleeping Gwen on Morgana’s bed, Arthur almost injures a hiding Morgana, believing her to be an enemy.

Suspicions about Morgana’s health in the wake of the enchantment arise, though Merlin is successfully able to deflect such suspicions by saying that Morgana took a potion before Gaius became ill, hence her health. The situation worsens as Arthur and Merlin both succumb to the sickness and Morgause, accompanied by the Knights of Medhir arrive to bring destruction upon Camelot.

While Merlin ‘looks’ for Gaius’ potion, he encounters and eludes a Knight hunting for him before seeking out the Great Dragon’s help. Merlin is initially denied assistance, the Dragon only agreeing to help when Merlin makes a promise of his mother’s grave that he will release him. The Dragon says that the only way the spell over Camelot will be broken is if Merlin kills the source of the magic, Morgana.

Troubled by the task set to him, Merlin takes a bottle of hemlock from Gaius’ quarters and returns to Morgana and Arthur, who are attempting to transfer a sleeping Uther to a cart outside the castle. They are ambushed by the Knights however, and Arthur takes it upon himself to delay them from getting near his father. While he does so, Morgana stumbles and falls at the feet of a Knight. Merlin ignores her pleas for help and leaves her to her fate. Morgana is almost killed but the Knight surprisingly stops its attack at the last moment, as if it recognizes its victim. It pursues Merlin instead, but is defeated by Arthur.

Morgana, Arthur, Merlin and Uther are forced into the throne room where Arthur plans to fight the Knights on his own while Morgana and Merlin lower Uther into the cart. While Arthur fights, Merlin secretly poisons the water he offers to Morgana. After refusing, Morgana accepts the water and begins to choke. Merlin apologises as Morgana succumbs to the poison.

Hearing her sister’s cries telepathically, Morgause rushes to her aid, accusing Merlin of murder. She demands to know what poison Merlin has used, but Merlin replies that Morgause will only gain such information when she stops the attack. Morgause threatens to kill Merlin, but after realizing Morgana will die as well, she relents and halts the attack. Surrounded by Arthur and the reawoken Uther and knights of Camelot, Morgause uses magic to escape with Morgana.

Uther thanks Arthur, but admits that Morgana’s abduction hangs over his head. He remarks that Morgause must not be allowed to get away with what she has done. In Gaius’ quarters, it is obvious that Merlin is still troubled by his actions. Gaius attempts to comfort him by saying that although they both cared for Morgana, she chose to use her gifts for evil. Merlin reluctantly agrees and leaves, saying he needs to do something.

After taking a sword from a Knight, an artefact of the Old Religion, Merlin returns to the Great Dragon. He asks what the Dragon’s intentions are once released, but the Dragon cryptically replies that there is only one road he can take. Merlin asks the Dragon to promise to not harm Camelot, but the Dragon simply replies that he believes enough bargains have been made. Merlin wields the sword and frees the Dragon, who roars in triumph and escapes to freedom.

“The Fires of Idirsholas” is the twelfth episode of the second series of the British fantasy drama television series Merlin, which was broadcast on BBC One on December 12 2009 and June 25, 2010 in the USA on SyFy.

A convoy heading for Camelot is ambushed by bandits in the forest outside the castle. The knights guarding the convey are wiped out and the bandit leader, Alvarr, has his men steal and wear the armour and clothing of the knights. He tells a hooded figure watching him they will have to hurry if they want to make Camelot before nightfall. The figure nods and removes its hood, revealing himself to be the druid boy, Mordred.

The bandits, Alvarr and Mordred reach Camelot that night and sneak into the city. Mordred telepathically guides Alvarr and himself to Morgana’s chambers: however, their conversation is overheard by Merlin, who goes to investigate. The pair reach her chambers and wake her: Morgana is delighted to see Mordred, but says they risk much by coming to Camelot. Alvarr explains he and his men are ready to fight against Uther, and that all they need now is a weapon powerful enough to achieve victory. He explains they are seeking a crystal of great power, taken by Uther in the Great Purge and hidden in the vaults of Camelot. When Morgana says Alvarr could never get it out of the vaults, Alvarr agrees that he can’t…but she can.

However, by this time, Merlin has raised the alarm, and storms into Morgana’s chambers with Arthur and the guards. However, Morgana is seemingly alone and she orders them out: Arthur angrily leaves, berates Merlin for wasting his time and storms off. When they are gone, Alvarr and Mordred emerge from their hiding places and beg Morgana for her help: she reluctantly agrees to help them. The next day, Merlin tells Gaius what happened that night, of Mordred’s presence and the fact that whatever he and Alvarr were searching for in Camelot, they were prepared to die for it. Later that day, Morgana sneaks into Arthur’s chambers and steals the keys to the vault, narrowly managing to evade Merlin’s suspicions when he finds her there. She heads down to the vaults and steals the crystal.

Uther is furious to learn the crystal (or the Crystal of Neahtid, as it is truly called) has been stolen and orders Arthur to find it immediately. When Arthur asks why it is so important, Uther admits he doesn’t know, but points out the fact that several sorcerers died to protect it during the Great Purge means it must be important to them. In private, Merlin tells Gaius that Morgana stole the Crystal: however, since they have no proof, they cannot take their suspicions to Uther. Gaius says there are many legends surrounding the Crystal, and that it is supposed to contain the secret of time itself. However, Gaius admits he doesn’t know much, and that there is only one alive who would know more…

Merlin goes to the Great Dragon, who upon seeing Merlin demands to be set free. Merlin asserts that he will, only when he is certain Camelot is safe. Clearly disappointed, the Dragon relents, and answers Merlin’s questions regarding the Crystal: whoever controls it will know all about the past, present and future. The Dragon laughs when he hears Morgana has stolen the crystal, sneering that she won’t know how to use it, but when Merlin mentions Mordred, he grows worried: the Dragon admits Mordred could use the crystal, and not only reminds Merlin of the boy’s destiny to destroy Arthur, but tells him of an ancient prophecy that tells of Morgana and Mordred, united in evil and warns that this must be stopped…at any cost.

That night, Morgana flees Camelot with the Crystal and goes to Alvarr, followed by Merlin. She gives Alvarr the Crystal, who tells her once Mordred has mastered its use, they will destroy Uther and Camelot. The charismatic Alvarr charms Morgana to his way of thinking, and she agrees to their plans, before returning to Camelot. Merlin returns to Gaius and tells him all that has happened: Gaius is quite unnerved, since Alvarr is a formidable sorcerer and has threatened to destroy Camelot before. Merlin remarks he has a fanatic who has already swayed so many, including Morgana and Mordred to his cause. The pair tell Uther of this, but leave out Morgana’s part to protect her from Uther’s wrath. Arthur is ordered to travel to the camp and investigate.

Morgana, however, heads to Alvarr’s camp and warns him of Arthur’s approach. When Arthur, Merlin and the knights arrive at the camp, they are ambushed by Alvarr’s men, and a vicious battle ensues. In the confusion, Merlin sees Mordred trying to flee: remembering the Dragon’s warning, Merlin uses magic to trip Mordred, leaving him vulnerable to two soldiers. However, Mordred uses his own magic to throw spears at the soldiers, killing them. Before he runs to safety, Mordred glares at Merlin, and telepathically snarls that he will neither forget nor forgive this betrayal. Arthur and his men soon defeat Alvarr’s men, take him prisoner and recover the Crystal. That night, Merlin takes the Crystal while Arthur and the knights sleep and looks into it: he sees a terrible vision of the Great Dragon laying waste to the city, and knows that it would be his fault. Horrified, Merlin casts the crystal away.

Alvarr is tried in Camelot and sentenced to death by Uther. Still in Alvarr’s thrall, Morgana berates Uther in private, hatefully denouncing him as an arrogant fool who ignores the needs of the people he claims to protect, and is hated as such by them and her. Furious at these accusations, Uther tells Morgana to go to her chambers, to which Morgana spitefully retorts “And you, Uther, you will go to Hell!”, a pronouncement that clearly leaves Uther stricken. That night, Morgana drugs Alvarr’s guards with her sleeping draught and helps Alvarr to escape. When Uther hears this, he furiously vows that if he ever finds out who aided Alvarr, they will rue the day they were born, glaring coldly at Morgana as he says this. Morgana returns his gaze and smiles evilly to herself as she leaves, confirming to Merlin that she was responsible.

Merlin confesses to Gaius that he looked into the Crystal and saw the terrible future it predicted: however, Gaius consoles him that what he saw was only one possible future, and that the future has not been shaped and that they all have the power to change it. However, that night, the Great Dragon speaks into his mind, demanding to be set free. Merlin is left in agony as the Dragon telepathically bellows at him, torn between his desire to honour his promise, and his fear of what may come to pass if he does.

It is a momentous time in Camelot when five kings from the surrounding kingdoms arrive for a series of peace talks. Amongst these arriving are King Olaf and his beautiful daughter, Vivian, and King Alined and his trouble-making jester, Trickler. King Alined, thirsty for war, devises a plan which would enchant Arthur into falling completely in love with Vivian, angering King Olaf and bringing war to Camelot.

After showing the Lady Vivian to her chambers, Arthur finds her rude when she comments negatively on the quality of her room and insults Gwen in his presence. Outside the room Arthur and Gwen laugh at Vivian, Arthur wishes Gwen luck with her before sharing a tender glance and departing. Arthur disregards Vivian as rude to Merlin, who comes to the conclusion that he only really thinks so because of Vivian’s comments regarding Gwen. That evening, a great feast is held before the guests and Trickler amazes everybody with his magic. He cleverly steals a strand of Vivian’s hair and makes a love potion, which he then proceeds to drop into Arthur’s eyes as he sleeps.

When Merlin enters Arthur’s chambers the next morning, he is surprised to find Arthur already dressed and acting out of character. Arthur, enchanted by the vision of Vivian, reveals to Merlin that he wants to express his feelings, not caring how it will be received by his father or the rest of the kingdom. Merlin, surprised that Arthur is being so open, assumes that he is referring to Gwen and agrees to take a bunch of flowers and a love note to her. Upon finding Gwen’s house empty, Merlin happily leaves the flowers and the note on her table before leaving. He returns to the Council chambers and tells Arthur he has carried out his plan, much to Arthur’s delight. As Gwen and Vivian walk in their direction, Arthur continues to profess his love while Merlin, still surprised, mentions the fact that it may still be impossible for Arthur and Gwen to be together as she is a servant. After receiving a slap to the face, Merlin realizes that Arthur lusts after Vivian, and that the flowers and note are still in Gwen’s house.

Rushing to Gwen’s, Merlin finds her musing over the flowers and holding the note. Gwen tells Merlin that her faith in Arthur’s feelings for her have been restored. Merlin tells Gaius of Arthur’s sudden change in character and Gaius reminds Merlin that if Arthur is caught with Vivian, King Olaf would be furious; prompting Merlin to remember Arthur’s mission of having wooed Vivian by the end of that night. In the courtyard, Gwen notices that Arthur looks troubled. When asked, Arthur tells Gwen that the gesture he made was not received well. Gwen, assuming Arthur is talking about her, assures him that it was, leading Arthur to believe that Vivian holds hope for the two of them to be together. At Vivian’s door, Arthur holds a tray of food and a rose, pleading for her to let him inside, only to be rebuffed. Merlin arrives and advises Arthur that his advances are unwanted and they both leave, Arthur feeling quite rejected. As Arthur lies in bed, disheartened, Merlin suggests that he return to his old love, Gwen. Arthur states he didn’t have an old love before Vivian before finding a lock of blonde hair by his pillow, disregarding it as a poor cleaning effort by Merlin.

Merlin realises Arthur is enchanted and comes to the conclusion that King Alined and Trickler must behind the scheme. Gaius orders Merlin to break the spell before Arthur involves himself in potential war with King Olaf. Trickler, who realizes that the enchantment between Arthur and Vivian has only worked one way, sneaks into Arthur’s room and cuts a lock of his hair before using it in the same potion on Vivian. The following morning, Trickler enters Vivian’s room to find her utterly besotted. Hethen passes on the message of Arthur’s romantic intentions to King Olaf, who becomes enraged and storms towards Arthur’s room. Barging into Arthur’s room, Vivian finds Merlin, who in turn urges her to leave. After casting a sleeping spell on Vivian, Merlin hides her in Arthur’s closet just as Arthur arrives. King Olaf, Alined and Trickler soon after arrive and Arthur merely escapes a beating when Olaf assumes his daughter is hiding in the room. After accepting Arthur’s forgiveness when Vivian is nowhere to be seen, King Olaf and company depart.

Merlin returns the still sleeping Vivian to her own room while King Alined chastises Trickler for the failed plan. Gwen, believing still that Arthur wants another chance to prove his love for her, slips a note under his door stating that she will wait for him to meet her at sunset. Arthur assumes this is a note from Vivian, and scales the wall of the castle to get into her room. While Gwen waits by candlelight in her home, Merlin and Gaius find a counterspell to break Arthur and Vivian’s enchantment. Merlin barges into Vivian’s room to find the couple kissing passionately and as he tries hard with the spell to break the enchantment, it fails as King Olaf, Alined and Uther arrive at the same time. Enraged, Olaf challenges Arthur to fight to the death, a challenge Arthur agrees to because he believes he would die for Vivian’s love. In her house, a saddened Gwen blows out the candles.

In the morning, Uther tries convincing Arthur not to fight but gives up when his son becomes adamant that he will win in the presence of Vivian. Still upset, Gwen continues her duties for Morgana and is told that Arthur is to fight to the death over Vivian, which upsets her even more. As she leaves Morgana’s room, Arthur and Merlin encounter the upset Gwen. Arthur asks if she will wish him luck, to which Gwen angrily says she wishes he were more honest with her. The challenge begins, Uther stating it is to take place in three stages; fighting with the quarterstaff, the mace and the sword. Noticing Arthur is still swooning over Vivian who is sat next to Morgana, Uther asks a final time if he understands the conditions before the fight begins. Arthur unable to focus on the fight at hand narrowly lives through the first stage of the duel, he is treated by Gaius, who concludes that he has broken a rib and must not continue. Arthur simply replies that the mace is his forte and that while Vivian is in the crowd he can win. Gaius advises Merlin that he must find someone to break the enchantment before Arthur dies.

After telling him of Arthur’s story, the Great Dragon chuckles at the concept before telling Merlin that the only person who can break the spell is the person who Arthur truly loves. Merlin rushes to find Gwen at her house, still upset. She refuses to help Arthur, but upon learning about the spell agrees to follow Merlin. She approaches Arthur in his tent as he prepares for the final stage of the challenge and passionately kisses him. Arthur is at first shocked by Gwen’s advances, but the enchantment soon wears off. As Arthur realizes that it is Gwen kissing him, he enthusiastically reciprocates the kiss. Arthur then asks Gwen where he is and is told that he is fighting King Olaf to the death, and that he is losing. Gwen implores Arthur to win the fight and live for her before he leaves. As he stares out into the arena, Arthur asks Merlin to take care of Gwen if he dies in battle as, although she is seen as a dispensable servant to everyone else, she is anything but to him. The fight continues and Arthur ultimately disarms Olaf, but refuses to kill him as it is not the way to attaining peace.

The fight over, Gwen returns to her home to find a single rose on her table and Arthur, who states he thought he should deliver it himself. Arthur apologizes to Gwen for hurting her and assures her that his feelings for Vivian weren’t real and that he has never loved another apart from Gwen. She accepts all of this, realizing that she herself had hurt Arthur (when she was with Lancelot). But despite Arthur professing his feelings, she tells him he will find another person to love and that she cannot be his queen. Arthur refuses to believe this and states that things can change, but Gwen states that until they do, she remains a servant.

As the kings leave Camelot having signed the peace treaty, King Alined punishes Trickler by shackling him and making him run all the way home. King Olaf and the still enchanted Vivian leave in tow and as Merlin and Arthur return inside the castle, Merlin smugly remarks that he is aware of what happened with Gwen in the tent. Arthur doesn’t deny it but instead threatens Merlin with death if he tells anybody about it.

“Sweet Dreams” is the tenth episode of the second series of the British fantasy drama television series Merlin, which was broadcasted on BBC One on November 28 2009 and June 11, 2010 on SyFy Network in the USA.
