Network Greenlights Eighth Season for 2012 debut

LOS ANGELES, CA – SHOWTIME is packing another hit of its highest-rated comedy series WEEDS, picking up an eighth season. Thirteen new episodes will go into production in 2012.

Created by Emmy(R) Award winner Jenji Kohan and produced by Lionsgate, WEEDS has been honored with multiple Emmy(R) and Golden Globe(R) Award nominations and wins over the course of its seven seasons on air. Viewers have watched and marveled as Nancy Botwin (series star Mary-Louise Parker in her Golden Globe(R) Award-winning performance) has progressed from a suburban widow who turns to selling nickel bags to make ends meet for her family to a full-fledged marijuana queenpin.

Last season jumped ahead three years and picked up with Nancy finishing a stint in federal prison. Her brother-in-law Andy (Justin Kirk) and sons, Silas (Hunter Parrish) and Shane (Alexander Gould) – with Doug (Kevin Nealon) in tow — were camped out in Copenhagen during her incarceration. They were all reunited in New York City where Nancy re-launched her pot business, worked at a hedge fund, fought off competition, and fought for custody of her son, little Stevie, from her sister Jill (special guest star Jennifer Jason Leigh). The season finale, which aired in September, showed the family dining together, happily residing at a Connecticut estate. But when a lone gunman fired a fateful bullet, viewers were left to wonder which of our beloved Botwins was the target, setting the stage for another audacious season.

Network Greenlights Second Season of Its Highest Rated Freshman Drama Series Ever Starring Claire Danes, Damian Lewis and Mandy Patinkin

LOS ANGELES, California – On the heels of HOMELAND’s biggest numbers yet, for this past Sunday’s airing, SHOWTIME has ordered a season two, consisting of 12 new one-hour episodes. The announcement was made today by David Nevins, President of Entertainment, Showtime Networks Inc. Developed for American television by executive producers Howard Gordon and Alex Gansa, HOMELAND stars Emmy(R) Award winner Claire Danes, Golden Globe(R) nominee Damian Lewis and Emmy and Tony(R) Award winner Mandy Patinkin. HOMELAND debuted as the network’s highest-rated freshman drama series ever, generating 4.4 million viewers across platforms in its first week. The series has continued to increase overall viewership since its premiere, with its most recent episode delivering the series’ best ratings to-date this past Sunday. Season two will begin production in spring 2012.

“HOMELAND is just getting started,” said Nevins. “Clearly, the overall audience growth from week one to week four demonstrates that this show is hitting a nerve in the cultural zeitgeist. Alex and Howard have created a psychological thriller that holds special relevance in the post 9/11 world. I’m quite confident that its passionate audience will be riveted as the season unfolds and people discover where this story is going.”

The countless accolades for HOMELAND keep coming as the show gets deeper into its debut season. Newsweek calls HOMELAND “the most addictive show of the season.” The New York Times notes “Homeland is well made and gripping… impossible to resist” and TV Guide says “Hands-down the best new drama on TV.” USA Today raves “Stands out as the season’s best new drama.” “Grade: A” says The Boston Globe. The LA Times relays “It’s the first telling of a post-9/11 story that is all the things it should be: politically resonant, emotionally wrenching and plain old thrilling to watch.”

HOMELAND is a one-hour drama series that tells the story of Carrie Mathison (Claire Danes), a CIA officer battling her own demons, who becomes convinced that the intelligence that led to the rescue of Nicholas Brody (Damian Lewis), a U.S. soldier who had been missing and presumed dead for eight years, was a setup and may be connected to an Al Qaeda plot to be carried out on American soil. The series also stars Morena Baccarin, David Harewood, Diego Klattenhoff, Morgan Saylor and Jackson Pace. HOMELAND is based on the original Israeli series “Prisoners of War,” by Gideon Raff. Along with Gordon and Gansa, the executive producers for season one are Avi Nir, Ran Telem, Gideon Raff and Michael Cuesta. The series is produced by FOX 21.

Discovering that the family is low on funds, the Griffin family begin living on a stricter budget. Going on to notice a story on the local news about the lottery, however, Peter decides to buy a ticket in hopes that he will win and set the family on a better financial platform. Returning home, Peter unveils that he has bought several thousand lottery tickets, admitting that he has taken out a second mortgage on the house in order to buy them. Watching the results of the lottery that night, they discover that they have indeed won the lottery, and redeem their winnings. Unable to decide how they should spend all the money, Lois states that she does not want it to change their lifestyle. Defiant, Peter decides to begin living lavishly, and quits his job.

After Peter agrees to invest in one of his friend, Quagmire’s, projects involving penis enhancement, Peter demands that he, along with his other friend, Joe, hang out with him in order to pay him back, and perform random tasks (including Joe asking for Stevie Nicks to play three songs for his wife). Annoyed by Peter’s demands when he shoots Joe in the eye, the two decide to leave Peter and end their friendship. Continuing to spend the money with no regard, Peter is approached by his wife, Lois, who warns him that he is changing for the worse, along with the other family members. Telling her that they no longer have to worry about expenses, Peter presents Lois with a blood diamond, winning her over.

After going to a restaurant the next day, however, Peter discovers that his credit card has been declined, and his money has disappeared. The family is distraught over losing their fortune, and Peter returns to the local bar later that day to repair his friendship with Joe and Quagmire. Admitting that the money caused him to forget who his real friends are, Quagmire and Joe accept his apology, and offer him money from the investment that he had given them. The family then goes back to living comfortably at their home in Quahog.

“Lottery Fever” is the first episode of the tenth season of the animated comedy series Family Guy and the 166th episode overall. It aired on Fox in the United States on September 25, 2011.

NEW SERIES ENLIGHTENED, STARRING LAURA DERN AND EXECUTIVE PRODUCED BY MIKE WHITE AND LAURA DERN, DEBUTS OCT. 10, EXCLUSIVELY ON HBO

Amy Jellicoe, an ambitious executive at a global conglomerate, has been her own worst enemy for most of her adult life. Her self-destructive choices, both at home and at work, have resulted in a very public, humiliating nervous breakdown. After an extended stay at a treatment center in Hawaii, Amy returns to her fractured life, determined to lead a more enlightened existence. But her newfound noble intentions only ratchet up the drama, wreaking unexpected havoc on those around her.

A unique blend of comedy and drama, the new HBO series ENLIGHTENED kicks off its ten-episode season MONDAY, OCT. 10 (9:30-10:05 p.m. ET/PT), exclusively on HBO. Laura Dern (HBO’s “Recount”; Oscar(R) nominee for “Rambling Rose”) stars as Amy in the series, which she executive produces along with Mike White (“Year of the Dog”), who also co-stars, writes and directs.

After undergoing a traumatizing workplace setback, Amy Jellicoe begins questioning her role as a top-tier executive at her multinational corporation. On a forced mental health retreat, she experiences a dramatic transformation that inspires her to adopt a new attitude in her private life and at her company. But upon returning to the office, Amy discovers that her new enlightened outlook is unwelcome and even threatening to her co-workers and loved ones.

“There are so many anti-heroes populating TV series right now, I wanted to do a show about someone who is dysfunctional and far from perfect, but whose impulse is to do good and try to be the best person she can,” says Mike White. “Amy is living a very ordinary life, but her relentless drive to make her world better makes her unique – and in a way, dangerous. I also wanted to a write a show that was centered around a woman, but wasn’t a dating show. Amy has a lot more on her mind than just her romantic life – and I hope people will find that relatable and refreshing.”

“Amy is a mass of contradictions, a woman of good impulses who often does the wrong thing, a woman who wants to make things better but sometimes produces the opposite result,” says Laura Dern. “As she tries to decide what’s really important to her, she tries to live a deeply authentic life, but her passion and honesty often backfire, making her efforts to change herself and her world far more complicated.”

Also starring in ENLIGHTENED are Luke Wilson (“Old School”) as Amy’s drug-addicted ex-husband Levi and Diane Ladd (Oscar(R) nominee for “Rambling Rose,” “Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore” and “Wild at Heart”), Dern’s real-life mother, as Amy’s disapproving mother Helen. Among the other cast members are Sarah Burns (“I Love You, Man”) as Krista, the former assistant who has taken Amy’s old job, Timm Sharp (“‘Til Death”) as Amy’s sleazy boss Dougie, Amy Hill (“50 First Dates”) as Judy, the no-nonsense human resources rep who won’t give Amy a break, and Mike White as Amy’s seemingly meek co-worker Tyler.

October’s episodes:

Episode #1: “Pilot”

Debut: MONDAY, OCT. 10 (9:30-10:05 p.m. ET/PT)

Other HBO playdates: Oct. 11 (10:30 p.m.), 12 (midnight) and 13 (12:30 a.m.)

HBO2 playdates: Oct. 12 (11:30 p.m.), 14 (10:30 p.m.) and 16 (8:30 p.m.)

Following an on-the-job breakdown, Amy Jellicoe (Laura Darn), a corporate buyer, returns home from an extended stay in a holistic treatment center. With a kinder-and-gentler attitude, Amy moves in with her mom, Helen (Diane Ladd), while making overtures to her company, Abaddonn Industries, to get her job back. Meanwhile, she reconnects with her ex-husband, Levi (Luke Wilson), but a relaxing evening short-circuits when he reverts to his old ways. The next morning, after reciting her new mantra – “I will change, and I will be an agent of change” – Amy returns to the office to start a new chapter in her life. But will Abaddonn take her back?

Teleplay by Mike White; story by Mike White & Laura Dern; directed by Mike White.

Episode #2: “Now or Never”

Debut: MONDAY, OCT. 17 (9:30-10:00 p.m.)

Other HBO playdates: Oct. 18 (9:30 p.m.), 19 (midnight) and 20 (12:30 a.m.)

HBO2 playdates: Oct. 19 (midnight), 21 (10:30 p.m.) and 23 (8:30 p.m.)

Amy’s hopes of landing a dream job take a hit when she’s demoted to the basement of Abaddonn, working in data entry amongst a group of social misfits. The job has its perks, however, as she uncovers a litany of corporate improprieties while surfing the net in her downtime. Meanwhile, Amy’s attempts to improve the lives of her ex-husband Levi and mom Helen fall on deaf ears.

Written by Mike White; directed by Miguel Arteta.

Episode #3: “Someone Else’s Life”

Debut: MONDAY, OCT. 24 (9:30-10:00 p.m.)

Other HBO playdates: Oct. 25 (10:30 p.m.), 26 (midnight) and 27 (12:30 a.m.)

HBO2 playdates: Oct. 26 (11:30 p.m.), 28 (10:30 p.m.) and 30 (8:30 p.m.)

Kicking off its eight-episode second season SUNDAY, OCT. 2 (10:30-11:00 p.m. ET/PT), HOW TO MAKE IT IN AMERICA stars Bryan Greenberg (“Prime,” HBO’s “Unscripted”), Victor Rasuk (“Lords of Dogtown,” “Raising Victor Vargas”), Luis Guzman (“Anger Management,” HBO’s “OZ”), Lake Bell (“Children’s Hospital,” “What Happens in Vegas”), hit recording artist Scott Mescudi aka Kid Cudi (“Day and Night,” “Poke Her Face”) and Eddie Kaye Thomas (“Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist,” “American Pie”). series creator Ian Edelman, Stephen Levinson, Mark Wahlberg, Julian Farino, Rob Weiss and Jill Soloway executive produce.

Back in New York after a potentially lucrative trip to Japan, Ben Epstein (Bryan Greenberg) and Cam Calderon (Victor Rasuk) hit the ground running, hustling for every opportunity. The partners scour the downtown scene for new business connections, following every lead they can to get noticed in the ultra-competitive fashion industry and make headway with CRISP, their homemade fashion line of T-shirts and hoodies. As the stakes get higher, these charming entrepreneurs confront new obstacles in New York City, determined to achieve the American Dream.

Meanwhile, Ben’s ex-girlfriend Rachel (Lake Bell) has returned to New York transformed by a trip to Africa and Europe; Cam’s cousin Rene (Luis Guzman) is pursuing a get-rich scheme by marketing his Rasta Monsta energy drink; Domingo (Scott Mescudi aka Kid Cudi), Cam and Ben’s well-connected friend, is developing his own “entrepreneurial” business; and successful hedge fund manager David Kaplan (Eddie Kaye Thomas) is a big supporter of Ben and Cam’s venture. Attempting to negotiate turbulent romantic waters, Ben finds his relationship with his girlfriend, Julie (Margarita Levieva), tested by Rachel’s return, while Cam lands a new girlfriend, Lulu (Nicole Laliberte), who owns a clothing store.

Ben (Bryan Greenberg) and Cam (Victor Rasuk) return to NYC from a successful trip to Tokyo full of optimism – and with duffle bags of hoodies for a CRISP pop-up store event. Back from her soul-searching globe-trot, Rachel (Lake Bell) realizes she still has feelings for Ben, but discovers he’s seeing Julie (Margarita Levieva). Rene (Luis Guzman) puts up a head-turning Rasta Monsta billboard that incenses his girlfriend; Domingo (Scott Mescudi aka Kid Cudi) expands his business beyond dog-walking.

Ben and Cam find themselves stuck between their new sales rep and a hard place when they have the opportunity to crash a brunch hosted by the well-connected Nancy Frankenburg (Gina Gershon). On the personal front, Cam is determined to move out of his grandmother’s place, and Ben makes an indifferent step toward commitment by giving Julie his spare key. Rachel bestows a lavish gift on Ben after learning that he and Julie may be parting ways. Cam goes into the dealing business with Domingo to help raise money for a river view apartment.
At an upstate wedding, Ben’s platonic friendship with Rachel is tested by nostalgia – and a revelation about the new guy she’s been seeing. Meanwhile, Kapo (Eddie Kay Thomas) stresses about speaking from the heart in his best-man speech. Cam charms Lulu’s (Nicole Laliberte) dad (Joe Pantoliano) to secure the perfect location (and an unlikely model) for CRISP’s new “lookbook” photo shoot.
