Emmy(R)-nominated actress Lucy Liu (Charlie’s Angels, Kill Bill: Volume 1) has been cast as a special guest-star on the upcoming fourth season of TNT’s critically acclaimed police drama Southland. The series – starring Michael Cudlitz, Shawn Hatosy, Regina King and Ben McKenzie – is slated to launch its new season in January 2012 on TNT. Liu will appear throughout the season as a member of the LAPD.

A critical and commercial sensation in film, television and on stage, Liu recently reprised her role as Viper in the animated hit Kung Fu Panda 2, as well as completed shooting The Man with the Iron Fists, with Russell Crowe and RZA, slated for release later this year. After recently earned an NAACP Image Award nomination for her performance in the Lifetime miniseries Marry Me and completed production on the films Detachment, Someday This Pain Will Be Useful to You and East Fifth Bliss.

Liu’s extensive film credits include the blockbuster hit Charlie’s Angels, its sequel, Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle, Quentin Tarantino’s critically acclaimed Kill Bill: Volume 1, and Rob Marshall’s Oscar(R)-winning film Chicago, among many others. On television, Liu co-starred in the hit series Ally McBeal, for which she earned both Emmy and Screen Actors Guild Award(R) nominations. She has also guest-starred on such series as Sex and the City, Joey, Ugly Betty, Cashmere Mafia and Dirty Sexy Money, as well as lending her voice to animated hits like The Simpsons, Futurama and King of the Hill.

Liu made her Broadway debut last year in the Tony-winning play God of Carnage, with Jeff Daniels, Dylan Baker and Janet McTeer. In 2010, she made her feature directorial debut with Half the Sky, an adaptation of the bestseller. A consummate advocate for human rights, Liu also produced and narrated Redlight, a powerful documentary about sex trafficking that premiered at the 2009 Woodstock Film Festival and aired on Showtime.

TNT’s Southland takes viewers directly to the streets of LA to present an intensely personal, first-person look at cops and detectives on the beat. The extraordinary show has redefined the police drama genre with a raw, authentic look at the lives and work of detectives and beat cops. Shot on location in the streets and neighborhoods of Los Angeles, Southland captures a realistic, natural environment where similar situations can and often do occur in real life.

Southland comes to TNT from John Wells Productions and Emmy(R)-winning producer John Wells (ER, The West Wing), in association with Warner Bros. Television. Created by Emmy(R) winner Ann Biderman (NYPD Blue, Public Enemies), the series is executive-produced by Emmy(R) winners Christopher Chulack (ER, Third Watch) and Wells. Chulack is also a primary director of the series. Andrew Stearn (Shameless, The West Wing) is co-executive producer.

TNT Renews Acclaimed Drama Series SOUTHLAND

TNT’s critically acclaimed drama series SOUTHLAND will return for a fourth season. TNT has ordered 10 new episodes of the gritty, realistic cop drama, which wrapped up its third season March 8. SOUTHLAND stars Michael Cudlitz (Band of Brothers, A River Runs Through It), Shawn Hatosy (Dexter, Public Enemies), Regina King (Ray, Jerry Maguire) and Ben McKenzie (The O.C.). The series has averaged 2.9 million viewers this season, up 6% compared to the second season.

“SOUTHLAND has been acknowledged by many critics as one of the sharpest, most entertaining and most authentic dramas on television today,” said Michael Wright, executive vice president, head of programming for TNT, TBS and Turner Classic Movies (TCM). “John Wells, Chris Chulack and their teams created a brilliant roller coaster ride this season, with countless riveting scenes and unforgettable character arcs. We are extremely proud to have SOUTHLAND on TNT and to bring it back for a fourth season.”

TNT’s renewal of SOUTHLAND marks the latest chapter for a series that found a new home on television’s premier drama network in 2010, after an outpouring of fans and critics campaigned to keep the series alive. SOUTHLAND has redefined the police drama genre with its raw, authentic look at the lives and work of Los Angeles detectives and beat cops. Shot on location in the streets and neighborhoods of Los Angeles, SOUTHLAND captures an environment where similar situations can and often do occur in real life.

In SOUTHLAND, King stars as Detective Lydia Adams, who this year has faced a difficult adjustment period with a new partner and a suspension over leaked crime-scene photos. Officer John Cooper (Cudlitz) is a seasoned cop whose addiction to painkillers is interfering with his performance on the job. His partner, Officer Ben Sherman (McKenzie), came to him as a rookie but is now growing up fast on the force. Detective Sammy Bryant (Hatosy) is part of the LAPD’s gang task force who is still reeling from the murder of his partner.

TNT has picked up the critically acclaimed series SOUTHLAND, closing a deal with Warner Bros. Television that will bring the drama from Emmy-winning producer John Wells (ER, The West Wing) to the network in January. TNT has obtained exclusive rights to air all six episodes that have been shot for the second season, as well as the seven episodes from the series’ first season. SOUTHLAND will air on TNT Tuesdays at 10 p.m. (ET/PT), beginning with the first episode of the series on Jan. 12.

“This is a great win for fans of SOUTHLAND and a perfect opportunity to introduce the series to new viewers,” said Steve Koonin, president of Turner Entertainment Networks. “It’s also another outstanding example of how TNT has established itself as the go-to place for the best dramas on television.”

“We are extremely pleased that TNT has acquired all 13 episodes of SOUTHLAND, giving devoted fans the opportunity to watch a show that they passionately support,” said Peter Roth, president of Warner Bros. Television.

“We’re delighted that TNT has stepped forward to pick up SOUTHLAND. We are all extremely proud of the show,” Wells said.

SOUTHLAND premiered on NBC in April to rave reviews. The series was called “tough-minded [and] suspenseful” by The New York Times, which also said, “SOUTHLAND is commendably stinting and cold, a series that doesn’t aim to please, and is all the more pleasurable for it.” The Hollywood Reporter called SOUTHLAND “exciting, smart, realistic and brilliant,” while Daily Variety said, “[John] Wells and company have delivered a cop drama with its own racing pulse. The crisp execution has a decidedly elite cable feel.

In SOUTHLAND, John Cooper (Michael Cudlitz A River Runs Through It) is a veteran cop assigned to train young rookie Ben Sherman (Ben McKenzie The O.C.). Cooper attacks his job with a no-nonsense firmness that sometimes leaves Sherman wondering if he’s really cut out to be a cop.

The series also follows Detective Lydia Adams (Regina King Ray, Jerry Maguire), who spends her off-work hours serving as her mother’s primary caregiver. Her partner, Detective Russell Clarke (Tom Everett Scott Boiler Room), is a father struggling with an unhappy marriage. Detective Daniel “Sal” Salinger (Michael McGrady The Thin Red Line) oversees a unit of gang detectives, including Nate Moretta (Kevin Alejandro Drive, Ugly Betty) and Sammy Bryant (Shawn Hatosy Alpha Dog). And patrol officer Chickie Brown (Arija Bareikis Crossing Jordan) is a single mom determined to make her mark as the first woman in the SWAT unit.

SOUTHLAND is from John Wells Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television. Created by Emmy winner Ann Biderman (NYPD Blue, Public Enemies), the series is executive-produced by Biderman, Emmy winner Chris Chulack (ER, Third Watch) and Wells. Chulack is also a primary director of the series.
